Teenage boy who died in Oxfordshire flash flood named as Max Sullivan-Webb
He died last night after being pinned against the grid of storm drain during flash floods in Witney, Oxon.
The teenager, who is also known as Max Weeden, and a friend became stuck in a culvert while they were playing in flooded fields at about 8.30pm.
Firefighters who pulled the boys free said his friend had been trying, in vain, to help Max keep his head above the rising water.
They were given mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, but Max died at the scene. The other boy was taken to hospital suffering from hypothermia.
Witnesses said a torrent of rain poured down into the culvert, which runs underneath a road, from a nearby stream, which had been swollen by rainwater running off a hill.
Ali Hagenan, 35, said: "I went out when I saw the helicopter and five or six ambulances and fire crews, but we were all pushed back.
"I saw them come out of the water with a lad and they gave him CPR for a couple of minutes. It was shocking to see all this going on."
Mike Poole said: "It gets ferociously deep out there. It had been absolutely chucking it down. I saw 30 to 40 firefighters and ambulance crew turn up and they were giving one of the kids CPR on the ground.
"I saw one come out on a stretcher and one being put into an ambulance."
Another eyewitness said: "There were lots of kids playing out in the water at the time."
A South Central Ambulance Service spokesman said one of the teenagers was treated for suspected hypothermia.
