His mother taught him to play the cello and his father taught him to hunt, fish, and camp in the woods and lakes of Northern Michigan.

Growing up, he participated in many sports like boxing, track and field, water polo, and football.

After he left high school, he went on to work for The Kansas City Star as a cub reporter.

Ernest Hemingway was only 18 years old when he got seriously wounded by mortar fire during World War I on July 8, 1918. He later stated, “When you go to war as a boy you have a great illusion of immortality. Other people get killed; not you … Then when you are badly wounded the first time you lose that illusion and you know it can happen to you.”

Just like novelists Mark Twain, Stephen Crane, Theodore Dreiser, and Sinclair Lewis, Hemingway was a journalist before becoming a novelist.

Some of the writers Hemingway admired included Ivan Turgenev, Lev Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoevsky, and Anton Chekhov.
